Haverford Township has recognized the threat of climate change. The threat is real and it is already costing lives and billions of dollars in government and taxpayer expenses due to increasing frequency and severity of flooding, wildfires and severe weather events (add reference). Haverford’s actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have saved money and reduced your taxes.
Climate Action Plan 2008: Haverford Township first recognized the threat of climate change and developed a Climate Action Plan in 2008. The Township operations met these initial goals and our actions have reduced operating cost and your taxes. Residents and businesses have not met these goals, suggesting that most people do not yet recognize the threat or understand that reducing carbon emissions can reduce their energy expenses - or they fail to act on that knowledge.
October 2018: Haverford commissioners approved a resolution to transition Haverford Township to 100% zero carbon renewable power by 2035 and zero carbon transportation and heating by 2050 (Ready for 100).
Haverford’s climate measures include:
With seasonal variations and catastrophic natural disasters becoming more intense and frequent, climate change threatens the health, safety, and overall well-being of communities across the globe. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Haverford Township are no exception. The Township recognizes a growing need to address its own contribution to climate change, as well as to adapt to the impacts that will occur and be exacerbated by the changing climate. This Climate Action Plan includes a community- wide inventory of Haverford Township’s greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, establishes emissions reduction targets and outlines feasible actions to achieve those targets. In addition, the Plan identifies ways in which GHG reduction actions can further the Township’s ability to adapt to the present and future impacts of climate change.
