When you choose an alternative energy supplier you will still receive one bill from PECO and be serviced by PECO.

Renewable Electricity

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

If installing solar is not an option for your property, buying renewable electricity is the next best option in this sector.  Buying renewable electricity supports the renewable electricity industry but does not result in a 1 to 1 increase in renewable electricity generation, but an undisclosed fraction.

100% renewable electricity contracts have often been found below the PECO cost in the past, but NOTE: There has been a market disruption in 3rd party power provider costs for both renewable and “brown” power and prices 2 times PECO’s price to compare or more have been recently observed.  You may want to explore other options, like installing solar, or simply wait for the market to settle if you are not willing to pay a steep price premium. (as of July 2022)

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

Renewable natural gas is a biogas that is obtained from  decaying biomass in landfills or anaerobic digesters. It is NOT obtained from drilling or fracking.  Although all natural gas goes into the same pipeline, buying natural gas means that you are supporting the sustainable portion of that mix.

You could see potential savings on your energy bill by shifting use of electric appliances, such as your washing machine, dishwasher, or air conditioner, to times when demand is lower.

Buying Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

The Energy Co-op from Philadelphia is a member-owned nonprofit which offers renewable natural gas as an alternative gas supplier.  As of 2021, there is premium to pay for this product.

There are multiple other companies that offer gas contracts that are offered as carbon neutral. This means that carbon offsets were purchased by the company on your behalf.  The gas itself was still obtained from fossil fuels.
